Inside the publication template

This page shows how an FAS publication page would carry the new pieces: visible topics, sidenotes, a featured chart, an image grid and video, without changing how a publication reads today.

FAS publishes a lot: more than 5,600 publications on fas.org, from policy memos to the long-running blog. The publication page already reads well, so the job is to add tools without adding clutter.1

1Counted from fas.org's own records on 22 October 2026: 5,654 publications, of which 4,715 are blog posts.

Notes like the one beside this paragraph are sidenotes, one of the optional items in the RFP. On a wide screen they sit in the margin next to the sentence they belong to, so a reader never has to jump to the end and back.2 On a phone they appear just below the paragraph.

2They're written with WordPress's own footnotes block, so authors don't learn anything new, and older publications with ordinary footnotes keep working.

A featured chart

Charts sit inside the text column but can run wider than it. Every chart carries a plain-language note and a table, so the numbers are readable by everyone.

Images and video

An image grid and a video block, both editable by staff, both kept light.

  • Captions sit under each image.
  • Alt text is required in the editor.
  • Images load lazily as you scroll.
Design note Video and social embeds load only on click or once the page has settled: that's how the RFP's “no measurable drop in page load performance” stays true while adding carousels, video and feeds.
